Private Residence c. 1955

Philadelphia suburbs

The new owners of this 1950’s ranch house required upgrades for wheelchair accessibility. Although a single-story home, it consisted of narrow doors and halls, tight corners and no accessible access from the exterior. Kate Cowing Architect, LLC designed upgrades including a new accessible entrance directly from the garage, a masonry ramp to the existing exterior door, widening the interior door openings and straightening the hall. By using the principles of universal design, Kate Cowing Architect LLC created a space that a wheelchair user can access throughout while still feeling like a home.
