Private Residence c. 1895

Philadelphia, PA

A typical city rowhome, this house had been a rental unit for as long as anyone on the block could remember. The current owners purchased it after the last tenant, a single man with very large dogs, moved after 16 years. It appeared that the landlord had not updated the home in that entire time. All of the surfaces required updating as well as the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems. Kate Cowing Architect, LLC removed the 1970’s era updates and renewed the home’s historic character.

Meeting the client’s strict budget required creative thinking such as renovating the kitchen using salvaged cabinetry and linoleum purchased at a building materials auction. When completed, warm light once again streamed through the windows creating an inviting place to live.
